Robotics Classes
Hands-on. Curriculum-aligned. Built for Goldfields kids.
Our weekly term classes give students the chance to build, code and drive robots in a small, supportive environment — developing the technical skills and confidence they'll carry for life.
Every program is aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum, led by a qualified teacher, and designed to build in complexity from week to week. This ensures students are continually challenged, engaged, and developing their STEM knowledge and skills.
Term Classes
Term classes run weekly throughout the school term. Tasks span across multiple weeks so students can truly dive deep into their projects — there are no throw-away lessons here.
Class size
Maximum 12 students, with a lead tutor and an assistant - giving a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio.
Robot ratio
Two students per robot, ensuring maximum hands-on time for every child.
Class length
All classes are 1 hour in duration.
Pre-Primary – Year 1
Our littlest learners use the VEX 123 and VEX GO robots. The VEX 123 is a brilliantly intuitive tool that introduces coding concepts through play and storytelling. As the term progresses, students are introduced to the VEX GO platform, ready for their next stage of learning.
In a recent session, Pre-Primary students used VEX 123 robots on maps of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to learn how to read maps, locate places around town and code a robot to navigate from one location to another. The conversations that followed -about how robots could help people in our community -were nothing short of inspiring.

Year 2 – Year 4
Students in Years 2 to 4 work with the VEX GO platform, taking on progressively more complex building and coding challenges. They learn to think like engineers — planning, testing, adjusting and trying again.
Year 5 – Year 8
Our senior term classes use the VEX IQ system — a powerful robotics platform used in competitive robotics programs around the world. Students tackle multi-week engineering and coding challenges that require genuine problem solving, collaboration and persistence.

School Holiday Workshops
Can't commit to a full term? Our school holiday workshops are the perfect way to try robotics — or keep the momentum going between terms.
Holiday workshops are once-off sessions where students build a robot and complete a set of challenges in a single day. They're hands-on, fun and a brilliant way to spend a school holiday.
Ages: Kindergarten – Year 8 (age-appropriate groupings apply).
Duration: Varies by age group — check the booking calendar for upcoming dates and times.
Booking: Places fill quickly — book early to secure your child's spot.
Competitive Robotics (Year 5 – Year 8)
For students who want to take their skills to the next level, Goldfields STEM offers competitive robotics — and yes, that means travelling to Perth to compete.
Competitive teams of approximately four students spend around six months building, coding and driving a competition-ready robot. Along the way, they document their entire journey in an engineering notebook — recording every decision, iteration and breakthrough.

At competition, teams:
- Compete in two head-to-head driving challenges
- Complete one autonomous (coding only) challenge
- Present their engineering notebook in a formal interview with judges
Competitive robotics builds far more than technical skills. Students develop teamwork, communication, resilience and the ability to perform under pressure — skills that will serve them for life.
